It's now common knowledge that jiu-jitsu is the most practical, safe, and sustainable martial art for all people, both young and old. But in case you're looking for more reasons to enroll your kids into a jiu-jitsu program, we've collected some solid reasons for you. Read this article to see why jiu-jitsu is right for you and your kid, and what makes the APEX KIDS Program stand out above the rest.
Should my kid train jiu-jiutsu?
Yes. Jiu-jitsu is an extremely intricate martial art, which is why we encourage kids to start training while they are young. Your kid can start training as young as 4-years old. Ask any late teen or adult who practices jiu-jitsu and you'll find a pattern: they all wish that they started sooner.
What makes the APEX KIDS Program different?
On the surface, we teach jiu-jitsu. Beneath the surface, we teach life skills. Other than spreading jiu-jitsu as a martial art, our goal is to create high-performing, world-class contributors to the world. We do this with:
character development - equipping the kid with skills and confidence, then placing them in a controlled environment to get frustrated, fail, and ultimately conquer fears, overcome challenges, and break through plateau after plateau
goal setting - teaching how to set and complete them
ultra learning - teaching them how to learn anything in the future, fast
gamifying motivations - finding what makes each kid "light up", and using these motivators to propel the kid into becoming the better version of her- or himself
Our goal for our students is for them to have a clear and holistic advantage over peers who do not practice jiu-jitsu. Learning jiu-jitsu contains life-applicable metaphors for leadership, business, relationships, and self-improvement.
The APEX KIDS Program is an ever-evolving project to practice learning sciences into jiu-jitsu.
What are the benefits of my kid training jiu-jitsu?
We're glad you asked. For starters, read further.
the benefits of kids jiu-jitsu
for the body
Coordination and motor skills
Jiu-jitsu kids become hyper-aware of their bodies and learn how to move better in space. The level of control that they develop for their legs and feet become comparable to the dexterity they have with their arms and hands. A more self-aware body is less prone to injuries, but more importantly, a self-aware body is open to learn more things in the future.
Exercise
Jiu-jitsu is a great form of exercise to take the edge off of highly-energetic kids.
for the mind
Critical thinking
Jiu-jitsu is one of the rare sports that teach and demand strategy, tactics, and navigating through decision trees under physical exertion. As the kid matures in their practice, the sport becomes a game of chess.
The mental stimulation that comes from jiu-jitsu is unlike any other: the love for the game is real.
for the SPIRIT
Ego check
"Some days you're the nail; some days you're the hammer", is a common saying in the community. It comes from the fact that you are not always the winner: there is always someone better than you. Jiu-jitsu can be a powerful tool to teach aggression without being emotionally volatile.
A meditative experience
One has to be aware of where they are, where their weight is distributed, how much they are breathing, and requires a lot of thinking ahead.
More importantly, jiu-jitsu requires its participants to be in the present moment.
for anti-bullying
Give your child the skills to protect themselves
Jiu-jitsu will give your child a real means of protecting themselves; it is defined as a martial art form that teaches a smaller, weaker opponent to defeat a bigger, stronger opponent by use of technique, leverage, and joint manipulation.
A confident child, equipped with the skills to diffuse the threat of a bigger and stronger opponent is the #1 bully-deterrent.
A place where they belong
Jiu-jitsu is a community to connect with other humans
In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, children meet many new friends and share bonding experiences like drilling techniques, playing games, sparring, and competing against other teams.
It's also a great way for kids to learn to communicate with other kids of all ages, as well as authority figures like the instructors and assistant instructors. You will get to see your child grow and learn with new friends that they met in BJJ class and keep these friends for a lifetime.
